Action/Space/Scifi/Giant Mecha

  • Code Geass - Again token mecha, mechs present but the characters and their interactions more important{eonsim recomends} {mattw‘s new favourite. TOTALLY ORSUM}
  • RahXephon - similar to Neon Genesis, but less screwed up brilliant music and artwork {eonsim recomends, as does mattw} {actually has a good ending! —mattw}
  • Cowboy Bebop — Space Pulp/Western, following a group of bounty hunters around the galaxy.
  • Trigun — Western/Sci-fi {mattw, eonsim recommends}
  • Fullmetal Panic - mecha (Fumoffu!) {Stephen recommends}
  • Scrapped Princess — starts out fantasy, ends with giant-mecha-battles. {mattw found it to be particularly excellent.}
  • Ghost in the Shell — Cyberpunk {eonsim recomends, mattw recommends the Standalone Complex series.}
  • Vandread — Roughly speaking, a comic character drama mixed with scifi mecha action. {the most ADD thing I have ever seen. It’s magnificent. Also some pretty thoughtful philosophing on family, community and relationships. —mattw}
  • Last Exile — Steampunk, airships, kinda Crimson Skies, but with a pretty huge twist or two. (It’s in English, too.) {mattw quite enjoyed}
  • Neon Genesis Evangelion — completely and utterly messed up in the psychological sense. You probably only want to watch it once, and prepare to be horribly annoyed at the ending —mattw
  • Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 — girls in mecha suits, fighting mutant cyborgs.
  • Zegapain - token Mecha, more about the characters {eonsim recomends}
  • FLCL — Um, yeah. Quite entertaining, very weird. The protagonist has giant robots growing out of his head. Also, rather innuendo-heavy, and incredibly hyperactive. Contains references to everthing, even with a faux-South Park scene.
  • Elfen Lied — Brutally violent action series with a romantic/Harem Anime subplot (also nudity). {I wouldn’t recommend it for the same reason I wouldn’t recommend Tarantino films, but I found it really good. Sticks with you, leaving you much to meditate. —mattw}
  • Darker than Black — dark-ish GITS-meets-Witchhunter-Robin. Supposedly (at least so far) the powers are magical rather than scientific, but it feels more sci-fi than fantasy. Quite enjoyed the first three eps. —mattw
