The Sandman is a series written by Neil Gaiman. It is quite dark in places (sometimes just plain nasty) but has more interesting story and more character depth than many comic series.

It’s Vertigo/DC, and features a few characters from other DC franchises. the villain in the first book escapes from Arkham Asylum, and I believe members of the Justice League show up too.

Also, Death is a sarcastic goth teenage girl, and the Sandman’s sister.
