Hellboy is Mike Mignola’s pulpy/steampunk/lovecraftian comic book series set in an alternative Earth where the supernatural is real and the world greatest paranormal investigator while legally a human is technically from hell.
There are four titles in the line starting with Hellboy, with the main spinoff being B.P.R.D. (Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense) which follows the characters from the B.P.R.D. after hellboy leaves. Recently war era vigilante Lobster Johnson and B.P.R.D. agent Abe Sapien have both had solo titles created.
The series has a very distinct artistic style and a dark sense of humour. Originally Mignola draw all the art himself but more recently many other artists have taken over various lines. Mignola’s trademark bold chiaroscura style has been picked up by many of the artists working on the series.
