Books that dont fit into larger categories such as Science fiction or Fantasy.
Both science fiction and fantasy
- Marion Zimmer Bradley - Space opera and fantasy both at the same time
- Lois McMasters Bujold Both her SF and Fantasy are brilliant (excellent, but a little same-ish — mattw)
- Stephen R. Donaldson - Dark SF and Fantasy
- Katharine Kerr
- Mercedes Lackey
- Ursula K. Le Guin — quite thoughtful, anthropological scifi, and odd but good fantasy like the Earthsea books.
- LE Modesitt
- Elizabeth Moon - Very Good space opera and decent fantasy
- H.P. Lovecraft :-E Science fiction based cosmic horror from ~1920—1930. Also some fantasy with his ‘dreamlands’ era stuff. {His writing kind of annoys me but his stories and especially his concepts are often quite interesting – brehaut} If you are planning to read HPL, Kennith Hite’s Tour de Lovecraft is really interesting. Hite is the modern master of the mythos, in the fashion of Sandy Petersen before him.
Other
- Tom Clancy — This is who Terry Pratchett was talking about when he mentioned books 2000 pages thick, half of which is weapon specifications, and which all have at least one greek letter and a word like “Conspiracy” or “Theory” in the title {pretty much I prefer his netforce series -eonsim}.{Weren’t the netforce ones written by other authors, just with his name and a “created by” on the cover to sell more? -jim}{not sure I’m pretty sure he coauthored the earlier ones, but have no idea about the later ones -eonsim}
Books to impress girls with — Ruth
